PhD course "Advanced Microscopy for Life Sciences"02.-06. Septembre 2013
The idea of this course is to teach underlying principles and advanced concepts in light microscopy. The main focus will be on state-of-the-art techniques based on light microscopy, mainly relevant for students in biology/life science. An essential part of this course will be spent on the demonstration/explanation how challenging questions in biology/life science can be addressed by using light microscopy.
Therefore this course will include advanced concepts as time-lapse imaging, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), FRAP and high/super resolution techniques like structured illumination, STED and localization techniques.Hand-on sessions will be organized in order to recess the theoretically taught content.
- Basic optical pricciples
- light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy
- confocal microscopy
- Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET)
- Photobleaching, photoactivation techniques, Fluorescence Recovery after Photobleaching (FRAP)
- Structured Illumination microscopy
- Localization techniques (PALM, STORM)
- Stimulated Emission depletion (STED) microscopyIn order to apply for this course please send a motivation letter (maximally 2 A4 pages/ 3500 characters including spaces) to biop@epfl.ch explaining why you are interested in this course and underlining the importance of the course for your PhD project. Deadline for sending an application is: May, 31st 2013.
The number of participants is limited to 16 due to the practical part. In case there are more applicants than available places, the selection will be made depending on the scientific needs. Confirmation of registration will be send at latest two weeks after the deadline. Please be informed that before that date, no confirmation of attendance can be made.
PhD students can obtain 3 credits for this course. The exam will be a short presentation (15 minutes) of an advanced microscopy topic. The date foreseen for the presentations is 23. September 2013. Presence of all participants during the exam session is mandatory in order to obtain the credits. In case of questions do not hesitate to get in contact with me.
